Resources for Studying St. Augustine & the Real First Thanksgiving

Teachers and parents! Check out these resources for learning about America's real first Thanksgiving in St. Augustine - 56 years before Plymouth.

Learn the history behind St. Augustine or just scroll down to the online and printable resources available for educators (and parents).

St. Augustine's First Thanksgiving Meal

Fifty-six years before the Pilgrims gathered at Plymouth, another significant event unfolded in America—a feast that marks the real first Thanksgiving. The feast of unity and gratitude took place in the city of St. Augustine, laying the foundation for a tradition that would resonate across centuries.

Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés

In the early 1560s, a group of Spanish settlers led by Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés arrived on the shores of what is now Florida. They established a settlement and named it St. Augustine. These pioneers faced challenges as they built their new home, but they persevered, cultivating the land and creating a community. St. Augustine still exists today and is considered to be the oldest city in the United States.

The Feast of 1565

On September 8, 1565, Menéndez and his men celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving. They invited the Timucua people, who were the first inhabitants of the area.

This was the first time people got together to show they were thankful and to celebrate their beliefs in the first permanent town in North America established by Europeans.

A Feast of Unity

This feast was not just about sharing food; it was a celebration of unity and friendship. The Spanish settlers invited the local peoples to join them in this moment of gratitude. Together, they sat around tables laden with the fruits of their labor—freshly harvested vegetables, fruits, and the bounty of the sea.

A Diverse Menu

The menu of this first Thanksgiving in St. Augustine reflected the diverse cultures that came together. The Spanish provided dishes such as paella and cocido, and probably red wine. The Native American contributions were probably turkey, venison, corn, beans, and squash. The exchange of culinary traditions symbolized the blending of two worlds and the birth of a unique cultural heritage.

Gratitude and Friendship

As the settlers and Native Americans shared this feast, they expressed their appreciation for the blessings of the land and the friendships that had formed.

This celebration went beyond the simple act of sharing a meal; it marked a commitment to understanding and embracing the differences between their cultures.

The Legacy of St. Augustine's First Thanksgiving

St. Augustine's first Thanksgiving set the stage for the spirit of gratitude that would come to define the Thanksgiving celebrations we know today. It was a genuine coming together of people from different backgrounds, sharing in a moment of appreciation for the blessings they had received.

The Plymouth Feast

While the story of the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving in Plymouth is well-known, it's essential to recognize the earlier celebration that took place in St. Augustine. As we gather with family and friends each year to give thanks, let's remember the pioneers of St. Augustine, whose feast of unity and gratitude laid the groundwork for a tradition that continues to bring people together across the diverse tapestry of America.

Online Resources

The best online site for learning about St. Augustine, Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, and the Timucua is without a doubt the Florida Museum's online exhibit.

For critical thinking, check out this article by History.com: Did Florida Host the First Thanksgiving?

Free Download: Thanksgiving Family Recipe Cards

Does your family have special dishes (aside from the traditional turkey and stuffing, I mean) that you make to celebrate Thanksgiving? Do you incorporate your family's heritage and culture in those dishes? For example, do you add a special twist such as jalapeños or chipotle to your sweet potatoes? Those are precious traditions that are unique to your family.

Over the years, I've posted about super delicious dishes that my Latina friends prepare at Thanksgiving as a way to honor their heritage. Here are some of them:
Don't they all sound wonderful? The camotes al chipotle is my favorite and I try to make it a few times during the fall.

While you are planning your menu for Thanksgiving, why not take the opportunity to turn this time into a teachable moment and spend some quality time with your kids? I've created these free Thanksgiving recipe cards (available in English and Spanish) so your child can write down your family's favorite recipes for the holiday. Thanksgiving Tradition for Developing Gratitude and Giving

Meet Tom T. Gracias. He's a new addition to our home this year. I can't decide if he is cute or creepy (😂), but he's really growing on me so I'm guessing he's the former. I found him in Michaels last month, and although I didn't buy him right away, he kept popping into my head. I think it is because he is a creative take on a popular Thanksgiving activity: writing down what you're grateful for and then reading those things aloud on the actual holiday.

Tom (a name I totally made up) was actually created by the company Turkey on the Table (read more about them below). He's a hit with my family, and I don't just mean my kids. Even my nieces love him and write down what they are grateful for on a blank feather so they can add it to his tail. I mean, I don't even have to ask any of them to go write something down. They just see him and grab a feather and a pen.

I left him attached to the "board" he came with, but he'll easily stand alone on his big feet. He's a sturdy guy, which is good because he gets handled a lot as the kids try to attach his feathers. I chose to set him up way in advance of the holiday so that my kids would spend time thinking on a daily basis about those things for which they are grateful. I don't want them to just think about it once a year on Thanksgiving. So Tom may stay up for a while.

He came with a small picture book that describes his purpose. You can read it to your young children - they'll love the illustrations and rhyming story. And he also came with a set of blank feathers and a permanent marker. But I'll be honest, I decided to use dry-erase pens so that the kids could correct any mistakes and so we could use the feathers again next year. But if you visit their website, Turkey on the Table offers a variety of feather styles and other accessories.

Oh! And one of the best parts of him is that he's multilingual. Ha! You can write on his feathers in whatever language you wish.

Part of why he caught my eye at the store is that the company has partnered with the nonprofit Feeding America. According to the company's website:
To date, over 1 million meals have been donated through the efforts of Turkey on the Table. For each Turkey on the Table® kit purchased, Turkey on the Table donates one dollar to Feeding America on your behalf, which in turn helps secure ten meals.

So in buying this turkey kit, I managed to double the difference I am making. And that means a lot to me.

Although I bought Tom at my local Michaels, you can find out more about him on this website: turkeyonthetable.com.

Just so you know: This is not a sponsored post in any way. I stumbled upon this lovely product on my own and paid for him out of my pocket as a gift for my family. I love this activity so much, I wanted to share with you...

Happy Thanksgiving, my friends.

Printable Bilingual Thanksgiving Acrostic Poems & Freebie

More bilingual Thanksgiving goodness! Do you remember doing acrostic poems when you were a kid? Usually, our teacher would whip them out around Mother's Day. They even made a song about it. You remember:
"M" is for the million things she gave me
"O" means only that she's growing old
"T" is for the tears she shed to save me
"H" is for her heart of purest gold
"E" is for her eyes with love-light shining
"R" means right and right she'll always be
Put them all together they spell MOTHER...

They were one of my favorite activities as a child (and I think they still are!). They are fantastic for beginning writers because they develop writing skills and critical thinking. They're also great for language learners because students have to think in terms of relationships: What words associated with Thanksgiving begin with....? And it boosts vocabulary.

So just for fun, I've put together this packet of bilingual Thanksgiving acrostic poem templates. It includes directions and examples in both English and Spanish, as well as five different acrostic pages with prompts of varying length and difficulty. There's also a blank page to allow children to use their own focus word.

You can find it here in my TpT store or the MommyMaestra shop.

BUT because it is Thanksgiving and because I am thankful for you, dear readers, I have created a sample freebie for you to use. I hope you enjoy it.

Thanksgiving Activity Pack for Preschoolers in English & Spanish

I've been on a creative roll the last couple of weeks. Thanksgiving is possibly my favorite holiday, so I've been digging out all of my Thanksgiving decorations for the house. And although I can't stand to be cold (and, oh, has the wind been so bitterly cold!), I love autumn: the colors, the scents, the images!

My thoughts have been on that early Thanksgiving between the Native Americans and the English settlers. I think about how dreary life might have been for the English without reliable heat, with the loss of loved ones, with illness and starvation. I think about the wives and mothers who braved the long trip at sea to come to this unknown (to them) land and how much courage that must have taken...and how much fear probably accompanied it. Starting over is hard. I've done it several times now. Most recently a year ago when we moved, I hope for the final time, back to Texas.

I think about the generosity of Squanto and his tribe toward these new immigrants who were so very, very different. Even though the relationship between settlers and the indigenous people swiftly deteriorated and led to a complete conquering of several Indian nations, for this brief moment, things were peaceable and life was good between the two. This is the thought that I cling to these days: that people can be good if they choose to be. People can let go of fear and embrace love for themselves and others. Greed can be vanquished, because really, what good is it? We can't take anything with us when we die, except our soul. And, I sure hope that mine is good and reflects love.

Anyway, these thoughts and my creativity have spilled forth into new printables. The first is this Thanksgiving Activity Pack for Pre-K and Kindergarten. It focuses, of course, on those basic skills that our little ones must learn: counting, beginning sounds, letter recognition, new vocabulary, writing skills, and more. But it also quietly reflects friendship, working together, and generosity. I wish my baby boy was old enough to enjoy it now, but he still has a few years to go.

I know that there are quite a few of these available online, but how many are available in both English and Spanish?

I'll tell you about my other fun activity next time. For now, you can find this print-and-go download in my TpT store and MommyMaestra shop.

Enjoy!

    New! 2014 Thanksgiving Day Books

Every parent I know tries to teach gratitude and appreciation to their children all year long. Most of them model appreciation every time they can. Some blow me away with their volunteer efforts that surely show their kids how to give back.

No matter what you do to help raise children who will grow up to be thankful for other's small gestures or great kindness, it is always nice to have reminders around the house. Our family always turns to books to teach us of course, but also to help me emphasize any given point I need to make. Books help us express our feelings a little better, see how characters deal with situations like ours, and to inspire us to dream big!

Right now, the theme of gratitude is everywhere! We are quickly approaching the holiday season and it shows. On a recent trip to the bookstore, we noticed rows and rows of Thanksgiving theme books. I thought, "Why not keep some of these books out and on full display all year long?" They could be little reminders to us and to children to count our lucky stars.

While there, I also started to compile a list of the latest books on gratitude for you and your little ones. All of the books listed below were published this year. Some are available on paperback and for Kindle.

    Enjoy!

    Spanish Language Activity: Gracias Turkey

This past weekend, my boys and I did a very spontaneous and sweet Thanksgiving art project. Diego, who is going on seven, was telling us that his class is starting to talk about all things Thanksgiving. I thought about how it would be nice to do something for the upcoming holiday that could be appropriate for all ages while focusing on Spanish.  Diego could practice Spanish writing and spelling by including the things he is grateful for on a silly turkey. His little brother, Santi, is turning three next week and I thought we could review colors, shapes and basic Thanksgiving words in Spanish while he put his turkey together.

All we needed was construction paper, scissors, glue, googly eyes, popsicle sticks, a pencil and a marker. Diego and I cut out circles in two sizes, triangles and "feathers". Both boys had a good time assembling their own turkeys with very little help.

While Diego first made a list of the things he is thankful for in English, I reviewed basic colors and shapes in Spanish and had a very simple discussion on gratitude with my little guy. His Spanish is picking up nicely! Diego and I cheered Santi on in Spanish, "A la bio! A la bao..."

It's really helpful when older brother Diego understands the importance of Spanish "lessons." Although, we speak it at home, we are not always consistent. It is always easier to explain things in English to them so I find these projects special because they give it an extra effort since we are all especially conscious of our Spanish time.

All on his own, Diego wrote that he is grateful for his family, delicious food, cool books, nice art, and school. Be still my heart!

I was amazed to find that he knew to use the adjective after the noun when he translated his list to Spanish. I didn't teach him that! It means he has been listening and understands how Spanish works!

I didn't correct Diego's spelling either. I wanted to see how many mistakes he made and if there was a pattern. I was thinking about a future lesson.  Interestingly, I found two. He spelled "deliciosa" with and "s" instead of a "c". He also used a "q" for "escuela," but knew it was wrong and he insisted I help him!

Santi did a great job with his turkey. He practiced waiting his turn, he listened to the Spanish conversation and used his fine motor skills by putting a turkey together! So cute!

Diego had a second chance to write his Spanish words on the feathers. He was so happy I let him use a Sharpie marker so he didn't mind writing the words again! Jaja! MY smart move! Practice makes perfect, doesn't it?
