Free Download: Spanish Lesson on Giving Commands

One of the most important lessons in Spanish is the one that teaches the imperative verb tense. But we don't see that highlighted ever in the PR for Spanish programs. It's weird because being able to tell people to do things is an important part of speaking any language! So I'm pretty happy with this month's free download from MommyMaestra sponsor, Spanish for You!

This month's freebie is all about telling others to do things. Sounds bossy, doesn't it? But trust me, it's not! When we are with people we tell them to do things all the time - Look at this! Write this down. Listen to this song. Leave it on the table. Come with me! I could go on and on.

This 5-page file includes an instruction page, two command and supportive vocabulary card pages, and two activity pages. There's also an audio file to help with pronunciation.

Encouragement for Parents with Children Reluctant to Learn Spanish

© Can Stock Photo - creatista

My oldest son ended our fall semester at our homeschool co-op with a C in Spanish... and that's only because he participated in class and that was factored into the grading!

I'm telling you this because the truth is for some of us, it's hard passing on our heritage language. Even though Spanish was my first language and was spoken most of the time at home, once I started going to all-English schools and - most significantly - once my great-grandmother passed away, Spanish wasn't spoken all that often. And I was certainly never formally taught it.

So although I understand it perfectly and can speak it well enough (I do make a lot of mistakes at times), Spanish hasn't been something that I easily passed on to my kids.

Maybe you feel the same way?

When my kids were little, we did a lot of Spanish. I have bookshelves bulging with Spanish-language and bilingual books. I read to them in Spanish all the time because I wanted their ears to hear the nuances of the language and my daughter had excellent pronunciation (and still does). She currently takes Spanish in high school at a private school and is getting A's. We're planning on her going to Spain this summer to stay with my family, which should be a really great experience for her and help her to improve her Spanish.

But that middle kid has resisted me the whole long way.

We've tried so many homeschool Spanish curricula and classes. And I thought, well, maybe he just doesn't want to learn it from ME. So I signed him up for Spanish in our new homeschool co-op that we attend each week. Pero nada. His teacher says he's a great kid, but he totally bombed the tests. And I would beat my head against the wall every week helping him with his Spanish homework.

So this semester we are doing something different and so far, I'm hopeful. Now he is doing Duolingo on a daily basis. And I haven't had to help him once. And he doesn't resist when I ask him to get it done. He even does it on his own without me asking!

I'm hoping to mix in some Spanish for You! lessons as we go along this semester. I'll let you know how this goes.

But I wanted to share all this because so often people say, "Oh! You're MommyMaestra! You've raised bilingual kids! You know how to do it. Tell me how." Ummm, no. I've never claimed to be an expert on raising bilingual kids. I struggle with it just as so many of you do. But I am always happy to research your dilemmas and help you find answers so that we can all learn from them.

And I wanted to tell you: Don't give up.

Don't give up because your kid refuses to learn. Don't give up because they're "too old." Don't give up because it's so hard.

Sometimes you just have to keep trying different ways until you stumble upon the best program or practice for your kid.

I hope I've finally stumbled upon the one that works for my middle kid.

Fingers crossed!

Review: SingALingo Online Spanish Program for Preschool

I have recently had a lot of parents writing me asking about a good Spanish-learning program for their preschoolers. Most of the ones I've reviewed here on MommyMaestra are for slightly older children, so I was really happy when I was contacted my SingALingo to share a review of their program for children ages 4 - 6.

Name of program: SingALingo
Target age: 4-6yo (preschool)
Amount of materials: Comprehensive
Price: $25 - $95/month (Homeschool - Classrooms)
MommyMaestra Rating: ♥♥♥♥

SingALingo is a preschool Spanish program available to parents and schools. They offer various learning materials: CDs, DVDs, and singable books, as well as activities via their online program. I received their trilingual book, Buenas Noches, Amigos, which is pretty great because it is fun and full of vocabulary in three languages (Spanish, English, and Chinese!). You can even go to their website and download two free songs. And as you go through the book, you can find prompts for which track on their CD to listen to while reading the book.

The program is centered around the "Tricycle Learning Method" which combines music and movement with second language learning. So you'll find activities where your children have to get up and move while singing songs in Spanish.

I was so impressed with their online program. Once you login, you find yourself at your home page. The dashboard isn't cluttered with too many options. Instead, you have three simple options to start with: "Resources," "Getting Started with Your Subscription," and "Unit #1 Yo me llamo."

Under "Resources" you can find an overview of the unit topics and the vocabulary that you'll cover over the 9+ weeks. You can also find videos describing the teaching methods used in the program. A Spanish dictionary, a list of common expressions, and more videos covering additional techniques or projects are also included.

I think parents and teachers will love the layout of the actual lessons. The activities are presented in a very organized sequential manner. Videos accompany each concept or activity being taught to help you (the educator) see how to teach each one. If you prefer to read exactly what to say, the script is there. And you'll read exactly what concept and technique is being presented for each activity.

Here's a peek at lesson 2 so you'll get an idea of what I'm describing:

Don't you just love the layout?

Each month, you gain access to four additional units.

I reviewed the Kids+You+Class+Home Program, but SingALingo has a variety of programs available at various subscription levels to meet your needs, whether it be as a teacher, homeschooler, or parent. The CD, DVD and Singable Book are included in the price of the 1st month’s subscription.

If you have limited access to internet, this probably isn't the program for you, however, you may enjoy SingALingo's CDs, DVDs, and sing-along books.

Disclosure: I received materials and access to this program for review purposes. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
