TpT's February Sale Ends Tonight

Did you hear? A sale is going on!

The TpT sitewide sale is happening now and my entire shop is discounted. This is a great time to stock up on no-prep printables for Valentine's Day, Black History Month, 100 Days of School, or even Cinco de Mayo!

Valentine's Day is a little over a week away. I have added a new product to my Valentine's line. The Book of Words is a simple way to introduce vocabulary related to the holiday to young children. Simply print the booklet version you need (available in English-only, Spanish-only, and bilingual), then put the pages together and let your kids color the picture, read the word, then write it in the space provided.

Do you celebrate 100 Days of School? Now older students can participate, too, with this new research packet for studying 100 Hispanics in World History. Designed for middle schoolers, this 79-page unit allows students to choose from a list of 100 Hispanics in world history to research and share. The list is available in two formats:

  1. The historical figures are arranged by century starting with the 1400s to the present
  2. The historical figures are arranged by field of influence, including musicians, artists, activists, scientists, athletes, writers, journalists, actors, leaders & politicians, and other notable figures.

Pages for note-taking, research, and one-page presentations are included, as are additional pages for comparing/contrasting historical figures, word association, and listing new vocabulary.

In addition, date cards and information labels are included for creating a timeline display on a wall.

Instructions are included. And it is available in English and Spanish.

And finally, don't forget that February is Black History Month. This set of one-page reading passages on Afro-Latinos in History is one of my most popular this month. It comes with one-page reading passages about the following seven famous Afro-Latinos:

  • Celia Cruz
  • Sammy Davis, Jr.
  • Soledad O'Brien
  • Roberto Clemente
  • Martina Arroyo
  • Pelé
  • Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez

Reading comprehension questions for each reading passage are included. I've also added reading comprehension worksheets that focus on vocabulary from the passages, a matching activity, true or false, describing words, and a Venn diagram for comparing characters. An answer key is included. The reading passages are available in full color or black and white.

But the sale ends tonight! So don't miss it...

They are just so fantastic, and their latest printable helps your young Spanish learner learn his or her Valentine's Day vocabulary. This holiday game focuses on the vowels and the sounds they make. How to Use Them

This low-prep printable activity is super fun for students.
  1. Just print on plain cardstock the version of your choice (English or Spanish).
  2. Then cut out the bookmarks using a paper cutter (fastest) or scissors.
  3. Next, have your students color in the images.

  4. (Optional) Cut out rectangular pieces of cardstock just 1/4th of an inch larger than the bookmarks to use as a background frame. Red and pink are great colors to choose. Or have your students choose the color of their choice and measure and cut the backer, if they are old enough.

Free Download: Frida Kahlo & Diego Rivera Reading Passage

My family and I just got back from a relaxing trip to visit my husband's family. So when I sat down this morning to write a post for MommyMaestra, all my creative juices were flowing and instead I wound up working on a new printable. Inspired by Valentine's Day, I decided it was time to highlight a famous Latino in history: Frida y Diego!

It's almost done, but I decided to go ahead and give you a free sample of the activity pack. This little reading passage is best suited for children in 2nd through 4th grade. They can even color in Diego and Frida.

The complete pack contains a reading comprehension page with multiple choice questions, another reading passage on Frida's artwork, an activity sheet for students to create their own self-portrait based on what they learned, a short reading passage about Diego's art, and another activity sheet for sketching out their own mural to go on the side of a school house. There's also a reading list to explore these artists more thoroughly. It will be available in the next day or two.

In the meantime, download this child-friendly reading passage about Frida and Diego!

Rosita's Strawberry Cream Cheese Tortilla Wraps

This is part of a sponsored collaboration with HBO and DiMe Media. However, all opinions expressed are my own.

In addition to bird watching this weekend, we're getting ready for our annual homeschool Valentine's Day party. Every year, we get together with other homeschoolers in our group to exchange cards and play super fun themed games. It's something we look forward to because it gives us an excuse to celebrate our friendships.

On Valentine's Day itself, I typically make homemade French toast for breakfast and place a card and little gift at my children's regular place at the dining room table. My kids rush off to make me handmade cards or crafts. It may be a Perler bead coaster in the shape of a heart, a sketch of one of our animals, a heart-shaped LEGO masterpiece, or a poem. I'll cook my kids' favorite meal and bake my husband's favorite dessert. We don't go crazy buying extravagant gifts, but prefer to give instead a heartfelt regalito just as an extra special way to show our love for each other.

Because love and friendship is what this life is all about, no? And that is why I love this little Sesame Street Valentine’s Day behind-the-scenes clip of Rosita teaching Abby how to say words of affection in Spanish in anticipation of Valentine’s Day. Even though my kids are older now, they still enjoy watching clips like this one from the show (they especially love watching parodies about movies and characters the love, like this one and this one).

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to interview Carmen Osbahr, the talented Latina behind the Rosita muppet. She is funny, vibrant, smart, and just as lovable as the characters she makes come alive on screen. And more importantly, she is making a difference in the lives of children all across the country - especially Latino children who have the opportunity to relate to and learn from the bilingual Rosita and Ovejita characters. I absolutely loved meeting her.

In fact, I have a little Rosita doll that sits on the headboard of my bed. She's frequently the first thing I see in the morning and a reminder of everything I love: children and education. My kids sometimes sneak into bed with me in the morning and reach out for her. Or if I am sick, they'll tuck her into bed with me to comfort me. They think it is fantastic that mama has a doll.

So in honor of Carmen and Rosita and Valentine's Day, I decided to make a special yummy (and healthy!) recipe to take with us to today's Valentine's Day party. The recipe is below...and don't miss the great giveaway from Sesame Street!! Be sure to tune in to watch your favorite characters on Saturday mornings at 9:00 am ET on HBO. They have a special Valentine's Day episode airing tomorrow morning that I know your kids will absolutely love.

How about you? How does your family celebrate Valentine's Day?

Rosita's Strawberry Cream Cheese Tortilla Wraps

Ingredients:
3-4 flour tortillas (burrito size)
1 tub of cream cheese (softened)
1 package of fresh strawberries

Directions:
First, thoroughly wash your strawberries and slice them up, discarding the tops.

Next, spread the cream cheese over one tortilla. Take your strawberry slices and arrange them on top of the cream cheese leaving an inch or so clear around the edges.

Starting at one end, tightly roll up the tortilla. Using a sharp knife, cut off the ends. Then cut the roll into sections, maybe an inch and a half wide or so.

Carefully arrange the sections on a plate and refrigerate for at least one hour before serving.

Bilingual Candy & Gift Graphing Charts for Valentine's Day

Bilingual Candy and Gift Graphing Charts

After our Valentine's Day party on Friday, I have no doubt that we will be coming home with a load of candy and other Valentine's gifts. So I'm ready to turn that into a teachable moment with this new set of candy and gift graphing charts.
Bilingual Candy and Gift Graphing Charts

There are simply 4 decorative charts ranging in numbers for young mathematicians. They are great for students who are learning to count or are developing their number recognition. My kids are older, so I'll just be using them as a fun activity to help them practice their graphing skills. The first chart is for early learners with a range of 1 - 5, the next two have ranges of 1 - 10, and the final one (shown here) goes up to 20.

All of the charts are in English and Spanish.

If you'd like to use these with your kids or students. You can find them here.
