Día de los Muertos: Libro de actividades preescolares

I am so excited to share that my Day of the Dead: Preschool Activity Book now has a Spanish version!

Thank you so much to my amiga, Dania Santana, for double-checking some of the translation. She helped get it in shape for publication.

Last year, I published the English version and it was very popular. But I had a ton of requests for it in Spanish, so I'm happy to be able to offer it to bilingual families.

These 40-page activity books are filled with fun, colorful activities to keep your preschooler learning while having fun.

They include a short description of the holiday at the beginning of the book and then launches into activities that help your children develop their literacy and counting skills. Coloring pages give them an opportunity to strengthen their fine-motor skills, and puzzles and mazes give them an opportunity to work on hand-to-eye coordination. Your kids will identify the beginning sounds of specific words and can also practice writing.

The activities are diverse to engage children at different skill levels. Beginning preschoolers may prefer simpler activities, and older children will enjoy more complex ones.

Make & Play Nativity

I love collecting nacimientos (nativities). I have quite a few in my collection. So when I saw this, I was excited because it is a great way for me to pass on my love of them to my kids.

Make & Play Nativity (aff link) by Joey Chou is an interactive book with press-out pieces that assemble to make 20 figures for a 3D nativity. They are pretty simple - most only have three pieces to put together (the manger is the only one with more and it comes with directions for putting together the five sections). And they press out very easily without ripping. So this book is perfect for little hands.

I sat down with my 2-year-old and helped him assemble these pieces.

And the book also comes with additional activities. There is, of course, the nativity story, to read with your child after you have assembled your pieces and set them up. Then you can sing one of four carols - the lyrics are included.

Older children can go on to do one (or all!) of the crafts listed in the book, such as making a Christmas star or advent calendar.

And I was delighted to discover that all the pieces fit back inside the book, so when the season is over, I can put them back in and save it for next year! With a little care, this book should last for several years.

Overall, this little board book is just a gem for children. It is probably best suited for kids 3 to 7 years old, though you can enjoy it with your 2-year-old, as I did, and some older kids might enjoy the activities, too.

You still have time to get this book before Christmas if you use Amazon's Prime 2-day shipping.

Guy Crafter's BLANK Bead Pattern Journal

My kids have long been fascinated by Perler beads. In the beginning, they tried some of the patterns that come with the beads. But it wasn't long before they were bored with them and their own imaginations took over. Their beadcraft was influenced by everything they loved: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, How to Train Your Dragon, animals, airplanes, Minecraft, and so much more. That's why we needed a blank bead pattern journal to record all of their unique patterns.

This post contains affiliate links.

Although my daughter enjoyed creating designs with these fusible beads, it was really my son who took everything to the next level. He wasn't content with the flat patterns he found in books. And before I knew it, he was creating 3-D figures that required snapping or hot-gluing separate pieces together.

Bead Pattern Journal

And I can't help but think that the time he spent just letting his imagination go to design and assemble these pieces was extremely valuable. So when he said he wished that he had documented his personal patterns somewhere, we decided to make it a reality and create our own Blank Bead Pattern Journal. Mainly because the blank books already out there, really didn't have all the spaces necessary for him to properly record his patterns.

He wanted space to indicate how many boards were needed for the pattern and which board the design currently showed. He wanted space for notes or instructions especially for those patterns that required multiple boards and/or assembly. And he wanted to be able to lay his board directly over the pattern and have it fit perfectly so that he could create the bead craft quickly and accurately.

Do you have a young artist like this? One who takes what they've learned and creates something unique and complicated of their own? Do you have a kid crazy about Perler beads and beadcraft?

Then check out my son's first book. Guy Crafter's BLANK Bead Pattern Book is tailored with the serious bead crafter in mind.

And with some prodding, I've convinced him to start working on his own pattern book, too.
