Celebrate May the 4th with Star Wars Books for Kids

This Wednesday we'll be celebrating May the 4th because, as you have surely figured out if you follow MommyMaestra on Facebook, my kids are Star Wars nutso. (We waited 2 years for the last movie to come out and had tickets for it a month in advance.)

Anyhoo, I was looking around my house and it occurred to me that my son's literacy skills can be partly attributed to quite a few Star Wars books.

Have you ever heard a friend or teacher say, "Oh, read the book before you see the movie. It's way better!" Well, with my son, who was a reluctant reader initially, it is the exact opposite. Once he sees a movie and falls in love with the storyline and the characters, then he can't wait to read the books. And he will read them cover to cover. This has proven to be the case for several stories: How to Train Your Dragon, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and Star Wars.

So if you have a reluctant reader in your house, and he or she happens to love Star Wars, consider checking out these titles which are so much fun for little kids.

The Jedi Academy series by Jeffery Brown

My kids agree: this is the most hilarious set of Star Wars books ever. This trilogy follows Rowan, a young boy from Tatooine, who hopes to get into the fighter pilot academy, but instead is selected to attend the Jedi Academy. The series shares his typical ups and downs that any young student experiences at school. We discovered the books soon after the first one came out, and my son waited impatiently for each of the following titles to be published. The story is laid out in a graphic novel format, and the illustrations no doubt really make this book series work. I loved that the books inspired my son to practice drawing because he wanted to continue the story with his own illustrations and storyline. We also wound up buying the series journal and an assortment of notepads and notecards we found at Target.

And if your kids enjoy these books (and I know they will), then they'll also like some of Brown's other titles including Darth Vader and Friends, Good Night Darth Vader, Darth Vader and Son, and Vader's Little Princess.

The Origami Yoda series by Tom Angleberger

The best thing about this series, in my opinion anyway, is the creativity it inspires after kids finish reading. My son has made more origami in the past year than I've seen in my entire life. From Origami Yoda to Fortune Wookie, my kids went so far as to start looking up additional origami patterns online from Angleberger's website: www.origamiyoda.com.

According to my son, this series is about a socially awkward kid who folds a magical origami Yoda. His friends are also a little strange and this paper Yoda tells them their fortune and helps them solve problems brought about by Darth Paper, a paper puppet controlled by the class bully. The series goes on from there.

Free Download: Grammar Force

On December 19th, my husband and I loaded up the kids into the car and headed to town for dinner and The Movie. The tickets had been bought weeks in advance (when they became available), but the planning of attending said movie had been going on for two years.

Four days later, my kids went and saw it again, this time with a new set of friends. They noticed new details and came home equally obsessed as when they saw the very first one.

Then one day over the holidays, my daughter and I were sitting around and we decided to welcome the movie into our schooling. Do you remember this giveaway? Well, my son was terribly sad that he was too old for these workbooks. So my daughter and I decided to create a few pages that he could enjoy during our class time.

We had fun creating these. And I was thinking, "Hey! Maybe some MommyMaestra readers will enjoy them, too."  So here you are, dear readers.

Inspired by my kids' love of the series, this little freebie simply contains five worksheets, each one with a different theme:

• Common nouns
• Proper nouns
• Contractions
• Adjectives
• Prepositions/Prepositional phrases

Enjoy this little freebie!

Star Wars Workbooks for First Grade

If you've followed me for some time now, then you know we are Star Wars fans. We are probably counting down the days to the movie more than we are counting down the days to Christmas. And, yes, we've already bought tickets. So today's giveaway should come as no surprise.

Last year, I was so thrilled to see these Star Wars Workbooks published. But I was was so disappointed when I saw that they only went up to the 2nd grade. (My son was starting 3rd grade!)

However, just because we couldn't use them doesn't mean that someone else can't!

If you have a house full of little Star Wars lovers, then perhaps these workbooks are for you?

These two books focus on Math and Reading. The books come from the creators of the Brain Quest series - one of my favorites. I've used Brain Quest workbooks every year with my kids because they are a fun and engaging way to teach children important concepts.

In math, your child will learn important concepts such as their numbers up to 120 by counting Ewoks and other characters, addition & subtraction with Jedi Addition, and word problems by reading about Tatooine.

In reading, your child will learn to read and write and phonics concepts, such as short and long "a" and ""sh," or basic grammar skills such as identifying nouns, verbs, and adjectives. The reading passages are cute and include fill-in-the-blank sentences to develop comprehension. It includes spelling and vocabulary lists, too.

Both books are aligned with Common Core State Standards (which is a negative in my book, but maybe not for you).

If you have a 1st or 2nd grader, these books are an excellent, fun way to practice those basic skills. If you have a kindergartner or preschooler, then you should get these books and just save them until your child is ready to use them. OR you can go buy the books for pre-k and kindergarten here (aff link).

Star S'mores: A Lesson in Self Control

So today I woke up to images on my personal Facebook account of friends who trecked to stores in the middle of the night to be the first to buy the new line of Star Wars toys being released in preparation of the new movie coming out this December.

As much as I love Star Wars, I didn't do that to my kids or veture out at that late hour by myself. (My husband would have had me committed.) But just for fun and even though my kids are older, we had a total blast watching this parody by Sesame Street and I took reassurance in knowing that it is educational. :)

But yes, it's true, we'll be making our way to the stores today - in a self-controlled fashion, of course!

We'll be hitting up Target's new line (aff link) - I've already been browsing the collection online. (PSST! You can save $10 when you spend $50 or save $25 when you spend $100 on Star Wars items by using the code: FORCE)

And - get this! - we'll be hitting up our local JOANN FABRIC store! So be ready for some clever crafts over the next few months.

Are you guys excited about Star Wars?

Star Wars Blueprints Paper Craft Millennium Falcon Adventure Pack

This post contains affiliate links.

Will wonders never cease? So the other day we went to our local bookstore (Books-A-Million) and as usual, my son headed straight for the Star Wars section. He came racing back to me absolutely delirious with excitement that there were a bunch of new products, including two new paper craft sets. After a brief bout of begging, I agreed to buy one and so we came home with the Star Wars Blueprints Paper Craft Millennium Falcon Adventure Pack.

You know, I really work hard to think of hands-on (non-tech) activities for my kids to do during the day because we are always limiting screen time. The allure of Minecraft and other games is too powerful, in my opinion. Especially for my son, so that's why we have strict rules in place. And that is why I love crafts and other activities that require my kids to think, read, follow directions, etc.

My son worked on this set all night until bedtime, and then almost all morning until he had completed both Han Solo, Chewbacca, and the Millennium Falcon. He still has the Falcon's cockpit to assemble. Putting it together required some patience and a lot of time and focus, so this little kit gets an A+ in my book!

Do you have a little Star Wars lover in your home? You can find this kit at Books-A-Million, or here on Amazon.

And don't forget you can find LOTS of other Star Wars crafts, products, and ideas over on my Star Wars Pinterest board.
